But this revenge drama had the advantage of two of cinema’s all-time powerhouses, Audrey Hepburn and Shirley MacLaine, from the leading roles, as well as three-time Best Director Oscar winner William Wyler with the helm.

Even better. A testament to the power of big ideas and bigger execution, only “The Matrix” could make us even dare to dream that we know kung fu, and would want to use it to carry out nothing less than save the entire world with it. 

Making the most of his background as being a documentary filmmaker, Hirokazu Kore-eda distills the endless possibilities of this premise into a number of polite interrogations, his camera watching observantly as more than a half-dozen characters endeavor to distill themselves into just one perfect minute. The episodes they ultimately choose are wistful and wise, each moving in its own way.
